Portraits Along the Heritage House Bluffs

Family photos followed on the resort grounds, and then Ashley and Ryan slipped off for portraits along the coast. Heritage House sits on thirty-seven private acres of craggy bluffs, with cypress and eucalyptus above and a staircase cut down the cliff to the rocky beach below, no shortage of places to stop and stand together as the light shifted over the water.

The bluffs run right to the cliff edge, which meant every portrait had the Pacific in it. The November light on the Mendocino Coast is lower than in summer, and the shadows it casts across the bluff grass are longer and softer; the eucalyptus and cypress frame the shots from above while the ocean fills the background below. This is a stretch of coast where the weather is part of the picture.

Dinner, Cake, and the First Dance

Toasts came from the people closest to them, the room warm and close the way it gets when everyone already knows each other from a weekend on the same property. The cake was cut with the group gathered in.

Dinner and cake came and went, and then Ashley and Ryan had their first dance with the dark ocean just past the windows. With everyone staying on-site, no one had far to go when the night wound down, just back across the same bluffs, with the ocean still there in the dark. A resort wedding at Heritage House has a particular rhythm: the day starts and ends on the same thirty-seven acres, and by the time the reception is over, the place has become familiar in a way a one-night venue never quite does.
