A Mendocino Headlands cliff walk and Italian dinner elopement is what Alysia and Jeremiah wanted, and in September 2022 that is exactly the day they had — nine people out to the edge of the bluffs at Cypress Grove, where the wind-shaped Monterey cypresses lean over the water. They kept it centered on themselves and the handful of family they brought, and nothing more.
A quiet morning getting ready, a cliff-edge ceremony in the afternoon with Alysia's sister standing as officiant, and then a long family table at Luna Trattoria for an Italian dinner as the evening came in.
They married in the afternoon at Cypress Grove, standing between two of the big wind-bent cypresses while the open Pacific filled the gap between the trunks. Alysia wore a lace floral-appliqué ballgown, the veil running long behind her, and Jeremiah stood in a slate-blue suit. Her sister Amanda officiated — a sister who knew them well enough to marry them — reading from a folder in a rose-gold off-shoulder gown. Their small group sat on a short row of benches on the bluff, a black-and-white dog stretched out in the grass among them, the wind off the water moving through the whole thing.
They said their vows with the water at their backs and planted a small unity tree together. The cypresses that give Cypress Grove its name are bent low by the constant coastal wind, their shapes particular to this cliff and nowhere else, and a low floral arrangement sat at the base of one trunk beside a glass lantern. When it was done, they kissed while the sun blazed off the water behind them.

“They said their vows with the water at their backs, the Pacific open behind them.”
Portraits ran along the headlands afterward. Mendocino Headlands State Park wraps the village on three sides, its trails running right along the cliffs past sea arches and hidden grottos and the grove of wind-sculpted cypress. Alysia and Jeremiah walked the bluffs with their family, the coastline doing most of the work. Alysia stood with her sister Amanda, the pair laughing while the headland and the ocean stretched away behind them, the autumn bouquet held between them. A young boy in suspenders leaned in to kiss her cheek in another. The family's chocolate doodle turned up for its own portrait, a sprig of greenery tucked at its collar.
With nine people the portraits moved quickly, everyone already together on the bluff. The sun dropped low over the sea stacks, a flock of birds strung out across the water, the headland going to silhouette as the last light came in off the Pacific.
In the evening the group gathered around one long table at Luna Trattoria for a family-style Italian meal, the nine of them, an easy table to linger at after an afternoon spent on the cliffs together. There was a champagne toast, a three-tier dessert stand, and a guest book set out for everyone to sign.
Luna Trattoria sits in downtown Mendocino, close enough to the headlands that the move from the cliff to the dinner table was a short one. A nine-person table at a small Italian restaurant is the right scale for a day like this — everyone in the same room, no one too far from the couple to raise a glass. A cliff, a sister reading the vows, and a long table for dinner, with a short walk between them.
